KFJC broadcasts a special that originally aired on Mayhem 6, 2011. The St. Louis-based Black Artists group was a multidisciplinary arts collective similar to Chicago's AACM, but including poets, playwrights, and painters along with musicians. They were fairly short-lived (1968-1972), but helped launch the careers of many influential jazz musicians, including Oliver Lake, Hamiet Bluiett, Joseph Bowie, Luther Thomas, Julius Hemphill, Baikida Carroll, Charles Shaw, Floyd LeFlore, and others. This special will trace the musical careers of BAG members, including side project such as the World Saxophone Quartet.
