KFJC new album review (May 22, 1996)
The Good Doctor gives a tip of his hat to Brion Gysin, in this 2XCD: one CD devoted to trancey beats, the other recollections and tributes including a loyal Faithful, a chocolate-covered Bowles, a jaunty Cale. Gysin pioneered the cut-up style that Burroughs is often credited for; a case is made that modern musical sample-ology is rooted in the B&B collaboration. Illuminating liner notes that should be part of a KFJC textbook. Read 'em and reap.

Choice cuts a'plenty on both discs, I was particularly taken by Burroughs' pondering his doppelganger: probing the myths of success and the facts of death. I also dug the Islamic Diggers and Laswell's Material. Joe Ambrose conjures the spirit of Hassan i Sabbah.

Remember the Alamut.

Outstanding guitar soliloquies. In listening to MazzaCane Connors' early work, his blues base is evident. By now the all too recognizable blues formulas are gone, however the essence remains...raw, desolate, cathartic. If I ever have to poke through the aftermath of a natural disaster, M-C's works will replay note for note in my head.

Unlike the first collaboration with Langille, _Come Night_, here there are no other musicians. Loneliness is underscored by keeping even Loren and Suzanne apart. She lights three solo (#2,5,12) torchy airs; he has two distorto-drivers (#8,#7) and the rest are his "over-drubs" of quavering sustain. All tracks are too short, dammit!(Only ~26 minutes total) Both artists artfully hint at sweet hope to best define sour depair.

Come wallow with me.
