The Command Records label was started in 1959 by producer Enoch Light, who pioneered many revolutionary techniques in arranging, recording, and mixing. Branding itself as The World Leaders in Recorded Sound, the Command label aligned itself with the increasingly popular stereo hi-fi listening systems of the day. Their records were aimed primarily at audiophiles but were also a big hit with the general public, who enjoyed hearing familiar pop tunes presented in this new, modern setting. Some of the artists with numerous releases on the label: pianist Dick Hyman, guitarist Tony Mottola, trumpeter Doc Severinsen, and Enoch Light's own Light Brigade. No less noteworthy were the bold, colorful graphic designs on Command's album covers, many of which were created by noted visual artist Josef Albers.

Kyoto based Rei Harakami had a relatively short career, passing away suddenly in 2011 just shy of his 40th birthday. He started out in 1997 doing straightforward techno, but soon developed a playful, idiosyncratic style with extensive use of panning and pitch bending and abandoning standard rhythmic underpinning. Their ambient sublabel, Apollo Records, released a slew of stunning records before the label folded (temporarily) in 2000. R&S relaunched in 2006, and the Apollo ambient sublabel sprang to life as well. Part 1 of the special will examine Apollo's pre-2000 output Parts 2 & 3 will look at Apollo post-revival.

The duo B. Experimental Band (dbXB), co-led by Bay Area improviser/composers Lisa Mezzacappa and Jason Levis, invites KFJC listeners into their online improvisation workshop, with a four-hour continuous performance showcasing compositions and structured improvisations by the ensemble's members, created specifically for making music in an online environment. Mezzacappa (bass) and Levis (drums) have been co-leading the large ensemble since December of 2018. In 2020, once Covid made rehearsing and performing in person impossible, dbXB moved online and has been convening weekly for community improvisation workshops. The ensemble uses software and a private server to connect the performers in (almost) real time.

Fred Hopkins was a busy and influential jazz bassist most noted for his work with the trio Air along with Henry Threadgill and Steve McCall. He also worked with a variety of other artists, including Muhal Richard Abrams, Hamiet Bluiett, Kahil El Zabar, David Murray, Oliver Lake, Don Pullen, and many others. This special will look at the many facets of his career, and as a result, a wide cross-section of mind-bending jazz.

In the 90s, Belgium's R&S Records was arguably the largest and most influential electronic music label on the planet. Their ambient sublabel, Apollo Records, released a slew of stunning records before the label folded (temporarily) in 2000. R&S relaunched in 2006, and the Apollo ambient sublabel sprang to life as well. Parts 1 and 2 of the special will examine Apollo's pre-2000 output. Parts 3 & 4 will look at the Apollo post-revival.

German artist Dave Schmidt has been releasing music for thirty years with different musical line ups and styles. Performing under the name Sula Bassana, he has amassed an impressive musical catalog and launched his independent label Sulatron Records. Dave's musical projects have included Electric Moon, Zone Six and Interkosmos. In addition to his own projects, Dave promotes independent European artists in a wide range of musical styles including Psychedelic, Krautrock, Progressive, Electronic and Experimental. We will have an interview with Dave and a live (or pre-recorded live set) from Dave in Germany. This will be a two-part special with the first special focusing on Dave and Sula Bassana. The second part of the special will focus more on Dave's related projects and record label.
