Born in Deep Gap, North Carolina, Doc lost his eyesight to eye infection at the age of two. His earliest musical influences were the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers. He joined his first professional band in 1953 playing electric guitar in a Country and Western band. They were often asked to play for square dances but they seldom had a fiddle, so Doc taught himself to flat pick fiddle tunes on guitar, and flat picking became a part of his sound, influencing many future players, such as Tony Rice and Clarence White. In 1960 the folk music revival grew, and Doc switched to acoustic guitar and banjo. He began to tour and got his big break at the Newport Folk Festival in 1963. His final performance was in April, 2012. In May of that year he passed away. Tune in for four hours of Doc and friends.

Yodeling is a vocal technique used in many cultures worldwide. It was brought to the United States by German immigrants in the early 1800s. By the 1840s many of the traveling minstrel shows featured yodeling, and it remained a popular form of entertainment on the vaudeville circuit. When Jimmie Rodgers released Blue Yodel #1 (T For Texas) in 1928, it created a national craze, and yodeling was an obligatory part of country music in the 1930s and 40s. This program features yodeling from the past to the present.

American Primitive Guitar

American primitive guitar is a fingerpicking style of guitar developed by John Fahey in the late 1950s. Other guitarists in the tradition include Robbie Basho and Jack Rose. Glenn Jones and Joseph Allred continue to release American primitive guitar material to this day. The genre is influenced by country blues, Indian/western classical, and new-age music. Relaxing, thought provoking music.

Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher is a virtuoso bass player and electronic musician from Chelmsford, England. His musical career spans more than 25 years of releases, including over a dozen albums for the seminal Warp Records as well as numerous EPs and remixes. His work encompasses a multitude of styles, ranging from frenetic experimental drum ’n’ bass, to jazz fusion, to solo electric bass, to musique concrète, to compositions for the Royal Festival Hall’s massive pipe organ. Born in Jamaica but raised in Philadelphia, Thom Bell, who passed away on December 22 of last year, was a singer, songwriter, record producer, arranger, pianist and composer. Along with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, he was pivotal in creating the sound of Philadelphia soul in the 1970s. He found success as a producer and songwriter for the Delfonics, Stylistics, Spinners and many others. On June 4 from 9pm to midnight, Zero Gravity traces his recorded career with rare tracks and the hits that made him a legend in soul music.
